This weekend I went to see my nephew perform in his first High School play. I might be biased but he was AMAZING! To see a young boy find his passion and exercise his creative mind...well I could not have been prouder! He had a pivotal role in the play and as I sat there I was reminded once again how incredibly important art programs are in High Schools. In today's era of cutting every special activity under the sun we should remember how vital art is to a child's upbringing. I thank my lucky stars daily that I had the opportunity to attend a public high school where there was such a strong focus on the arts. We had classes like drawing, photography, theater, 3 levels of graphic design and computer graphics (yes this was 20 yrs ago before schools even had computers!) right at our front door. Without these programs I wonder what type of field I would be in today. I am forever grateful for my amazing graphic design teacher Ms. Sullivan who taught me to look outside of what was right in front of me and to stretch my creative mind!
Above is one of my favorite quotes from the speech Amy Poehler (yes we graduated from the same High School!) gave at Harvard's graduation in the spring. Isn't it the truth? When we are young it is much easier to put yourself in the spotlight and flex that creativity even if it's not the popular thing to do. So stand up for the art programs in your community I promise you a child will someday thank you for it!
